It is said that Charlemagne had found the graves of Zurich’s martyr’s Felix and Regula. He had a church built at the same place as choristers' cloister. The Swiss-German reformation which was headed by Huldrych Zwingli and Heinrich Bullinge originated from Grossmuster around the first half of 16th century. The cloister was then taken over by the theological college. Subsequently it became the germinal cell of today’s University of Zurich.
The Grossmunster is worth a visit, especially for its Romanesque crypt, Romanesque capitals in the church and cloister. Choir window by Augusto Giacometti, bronze doors by Otto Münch and the Reformation Museum in the cloister are some of the special attractions. The Grossmuster is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM from 15th March to 31st October and 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM for the rest of the time.
On the first Sunday of every month Grossmunster organizes public tours starting at 11:30 AM. The one hour tour is in German. It begins from the entrance and also takes people to the cloister. It may cost CHF 5.00 per person. Thrilling spiritual night tour is also arranged by Grossmuster. This too is a one hour tour and is held on the last Friday of every month. The tour begins from the main entrance at 10:00 PM. A well-informed guide takes people through the various quarters of the church. It provides a great opportunity to experience the church atmosphere and the splendid night view of the city from the church tower. The spiritual night tour is in English and the church does not charge anything for it.
