The medieval heart of the Altstadt's is Schipfe and it is one of the oldest quarters of the city of Zurich. The name of the place originates from the nautical term of “schupfen”, which was used by the fisherman to describe how they haul their boat on the rivers banks. Relating to its name, the place was actually a former residential quarters for the fishermen. During the middle ages, Schipfe was the centre point for transaction of merchandised goods and from there till 16th century, the silk industries headquartered their base of business at this place.
Today, Schipfe is considered as the ’Street of the Artisans’, where the craftsmen, in the middle of their work take out time for the visitors to share their experience and advice. When you roam around the picturesque lanes of Schipfe, you may come across fascination pieces of artworks, boutiques, and even bohemian style of cafes. Small and romantic shops distributed all over the lanes offer custom-made products and workshops along the Limmat River form a unique attraction in itself. Schipfe is an oldest district of Zurich but still the place is young in its idyllic location where you can linger, you can shop around ethnic products and even can feast on some delicious foods.
